About Acute Illness

When your child is suddenly sick, our practice can offer you same-day appointments to see your child immediately. Whether it is the flu or mononucleosis, our board-certified pediatricians will do everything possible to provide your child care.  We are proud to announce our affiliation with Triage4pediatrics, a well-respected nursing service in our community. Triage4pediatrics shares our commitment for compassionate, quality care. If your child has an urgent need after our regular business hours that cannot wait until the next business day, your call will be answered by a registered pediatric nurse via our triage service. As always, a Village Pediatrics physician will be available for consultations. Please be aware that you may be assessed a small fee for after-hours service. If you have additional questions, please feel free to call our office.

Conditions and Symptoms

Flu

We can all get the flu at some point during the year, and despite prevention and flu shots, our children are no different. The flu can exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy or extreme tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Cough or dry cough
  • Runny nose
  • Vomiting
  • Aches and pains

Mono

You may not even suspect your child has mono, or the Epstein-Bar virus or the "kissing disease," but it is really common in teenagers (and can be easily passed on to younger siblings). Mono can mimic the flu. It is passed on through saliva, and siblings who share drinks, bites of food, or accidently cough or sneeze can spread the virus.

Recommended Treatments

Trust your instincts when it comes to your child needing to see the doctor. Generally, the flu has to work its way out of your child’s system in a matter of days, and requires a lot of fluids, fever reducers, plenty of rest, and lots of TLC (tender loving care). If your child appears to be dehydrated or has a fever for more than a few days, please call for an appointment. Pediatricians can prescribe antiviral medications like Tamiflu. While rest is the best treatment for mono, if symptoms linger or if you have questions, please call as soon as possible.
